Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused the European bureaucracy of acting under external influence, criticizing what he called “double standards” in assessing the country’s progress toward EU integration.

Speaking to journalists in Zugdidi, western Georgia, on Wednesday, Kobakhidze addressed concerns over delays in visa liberalization and recent EU assessments of Georgia, noting that the country’s achievements were often overlooked.

“This is another expression of double standards. Let us compare Moldova with our country,” he said, highlighting what he described as Moldova’s entrenched corruption, weak institutions, and lack of sanctions. “Over the past four years, from 2021 to 2024, we increased the gap with Moldova’s economy by more than $11 billion. Yet Georgia faces threats and political pressure despite outperforming Moldova economically and institutionally.”

Kobakhidze further criticized the “lack of political and media pluralism in Moldova,” contrasting it with Georgia, and accused the European bureaucracy of acting entirely at the behest of external forces rather than independently.

He also addressed the broader context of Georgia’s EU ambitions, emphasizing that “integration should not come at the expense of the country’s values or security.”

“When we are asked to trade our values or peace and prosperity for EU accession, even indirectly, this is an incorrect dilemma. We seek EU membership while preserving peace, development, and our traditional values. Under no circumstances will we compromise our principles,” he said.
