Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said combating drug crime would remain one of the Government’s main priorities, highlighting significant progress in reducing drug availability.

Kobakhidze said drug accessibility had decreased about eightfold, both physically and financially, as a result of “effective efforts” by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“In the past three months, 156 people have been prosecuted for drug trafficking - including major dealers - and 226 individuals were charged with possession of large quantities of narcotics, an unprecedented figure. As a result, drug availability has dropped significantly. This outcome is directly tied to the Ministry’s efficient work,” the Prime Minister said.

He also underlined record seizures of narcotics, noting the confiscation of 298 kilograms of heroin and more than 34,500 methadone pills in recent operations.

“Drug trafficking, organised crime, and corruption are among the key challenges to public safety. The statistics presented today show that decisive measures are producing results. The fight against drugs will remain one of our top priorities,” Kobakhidze emphasised.
