Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has criticized the European Parliament’s invitation to President Salome Zourabichvili, comparing her expected appearance to a “performance” similar to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s speeches.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Kobakhidze dismissed the initiative as purely symbolic. “She should stand up, like Zelenskyy, and end her speech with an ovation. Of course, specific officials and politicians will not be able to influence the development of events in our country with such simple performances,” Kobakhidze remarked.
The comments follow European Parliament President Roberta Metsola’s call to stand with Georgian citizens protesting for a “European future.” Metsola condemned the use of force against demonstrators and highlighted the incompatibility of such actions with Georgia’s EU aspirations.
“We have invited Salome Zourabichvili to the European Parliament and are discussing with her how best to organize this,” Metsola stated, reaffirming the EU’s support for Georgian protesters.
