Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday paid tribute to those who died in the Abkhazia conflict, marking the 32nd anniversary of the fall of Sokhumi.

At Heroes’ Square in the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi, Kobakhidze laid a wreath at the memorial dedicated to the fallen.

“This day is a reminder of the tragedy of Abkhazia, but it also reminds us of the bravery of many Georgians,” Kobakhidze said.

He emphasised that honouring the memory of the fallen also carried a duty for the living.

“Today we pay tribute to the heroes who perished in Abkhazia and remember the tragedy. These were tragic events, but at the same time this day reminds us of the heroism of many Georgians. It also reminds us of our responsibility to fulfill the mission for which our heroes sacrificed their lives - the peaceful restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity. This is our responsibility before them”, he said.
