Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has accused German Ambassador Peter Fischer of political bias, saying it influenced the ambassador’s decision to avoid discussing certain topics unfavorable to Georgia’s radical opposition.
Responding to a journalist’s question, Kobakhidze said Fischer’s mandate was coming to an end soon and expressed hope that his successor would focus on improving bilateral relations rather than undermining them.
“Mr. Fischer is politically biased. Beyond that, there is little more to say. His term will end soon, and we hope that he will be replaced by an ambassador who will work to strengthen, not weaken, relations between Georgia and Germany. He often intervenes politically in favor of the opposition, but in this case, when he was expected to provide an answer that would have been damaging to the opposition, he avoided speaking to journalists. It is absolutely clear that his actions reflect political bias, and this is why he sidestepped discussion on a topic that was not advantageous to the radical opposition,” Kobakhidze said.
