Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday accused German Ambassador Peter Fischer of openly siding with opposition forces in the country and breaching diplomatic norms.
“Fischer is directly involved in political processes. He supports all these subjects, from Lelo to the United National Movement. He is politically backing these actors. There is no greater violation of the Vienna Convention than this,” Kobakhidze told domestic reporters.
The Prime Minister added Fischer had engaged with what he described as radical extremist groups.
“You see that he meets and encourages members of a radical extremist group. Within two days, these same individuals are organising radical rallies, marked by aggression and hatred, and they are linked to political actors. This is a blatant violation of Article 41 of the Vienna Convention,” Kobakhidze said.
He also criticised the Ambassador’s stay at opposition leader Mamuka Khazaradze’s residence, calling it another example requiring reaction. “All standards have been erased in certain EU countries today, which is very regrettable. But this is a clear case of a diplomat being directly involved in political processes,” he noted.
Kobakhidze concluded that Fischer’s actions undermine the neutrality required by diplomatic law: “Ask anyone whose political supporter Fischer is, and they will tell you - he backs everyone from Lelo to the United National Movement. This is the clearest violation possible.”
