Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, has accused the European Union’s ambassador to Georgia,Pawel Herczynski, of making what he described as “threatening” remarks towards the Georgian public.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Kobakhidze said comments attributed to the ambassador, which he interpreted as warnings about civil unrest and economic decline, were “extremely serious”. He also criticised earlier statements made by the envoy ahead of Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections, alleging that they encouraged voters to oppose the current government.
Kobakhidze linked the remarks to broader political tensions, arguing that a return of opposition forces to power would represent a reversal to what he described as a “difficult past”.
The prime minister said the government had responded through diplomatic channels, confirming that the ambassador had been summoned by the foreign ministry to provide explanations.
