Georgia is proud of its more than 20,000 successful seafarers, whose annual contribution to strengthening the country’s economy is estimated at up to ₾1 billion (about $378 million), Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Thursday while addressing an event marking the International Day of the Seafarer.
“It is our responsibility to create all the necessary conditions for these figures to grow further, for even greater progress to be achieved and for Georgia to secure an even stronger position on the global maritime map,” the Prime Minister said.
Congratulating Georgian seafarers on their professional holiday, the Prime Minister noted that the occasion is not only a celebration of the profession but also an opportunity to recognise their contribution, review achievements and outline future goals.
“It is our responsibility to create all the necessary conditions for these figures to grow further, for even greater progress to be achieved, and for Georgia to secure an even stronger position on the global maritime map,” the Prime Minister noted.
“Georgia has a clear and ambitious goal – to become a strong maritime nation where modern infrastructure, competitive ports and highly qualified professionals form a unified and efficient system,” Kobakhidze stated.
The Prime Minister said education plays a key role in achieving this objective. He noted that more than ₾30 million (about $11.37 million) has been invested in strengthening and modernising maritime education in recent years.
“Upgrading the educational environment to meet modern standards is a direct investment in our youth – the generation that will shape Georgia’s maritime future and represent our country with even greater distinction in the international fleet,” he said.
