Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has criticised the Estonian embassy for what he described as attempts to politicise the country’s higher education reform, saying the move aligned with the agenda of radical opposition forces.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said that while higher education quality in Georgia remained inadequate, politicising efforts to improve the system is misguided.

“We all agree that the quality of higher education in Georgia is not sufficient, and this situation exists at Ilia State University as well as other universities, including Tbilisi State University, the Technical University, public and private institutions. We want to improve this situation. When the Estonian embassy tries to politicise these efforts, it is both confusing and wrong. It is just another cheap attempt to give a political angle to something that has none,” he said.

The Prime Minister emphasised that reforming higher education should focus on improving standards and outcomes for students rather than being used as a tool for political influence.
