Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday said US President Donald Trump had publicly emphasised the need to deepen political and economic ties with China, dismissing criticism of Georgia-China relations as “speculation”.

“As for China, President Trump’s position is that he must strengthen relations with China. Against this backdrop, when certain so-called ‘deep state’ agents in the US make negative remarks about Georgia-China ties, this is nothing but speculation,” Kobakhidze told reporters.

He added that Trump himself had “spoken about the need to deepen the partnership with China as much as possible, both politically and economically,” noting that critical statements from “certain agents, both Georgian and deep state” were highly speculative.
