Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has announced a “comprehensive review of Georgia’s energy sector, promising a “completely new approach” aimed at benefiting both the country and private energy companies.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Kobakhidze said the review had followed recognition of “incorrect practices” in the sector and aimed to ensure transparency and efficiency.

“We discussed the incorrect practices that existed in the energy sector. Everything that was wrong needs to be revised. We are starting a new approach to energy policy that will be as acceptable as possible for both the country and private companies involved in the sector,” he said.

Kobakhidze added that recent measures, including the temporary suspension of certain processes, were part of the broader effort to reassess energy policy.

“All actions will be transparent and aimed at achieving our goal of self-sufficiency. The practices so far have been problematic. We are fully focused on the successful implementation of energy policy, including major projects that must be carried out. Soon you will see updates in this area,” he said.

He also indicated that the government was considering both state-led and mixed public-private energy projects, highlighting the potential for collaborative initiatives to strengthen the sector.
