Kobakhidze said the United States needed to restore trust in both the American and international banking systems

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has suggested that the approaches established during the previous US administration, including sanctions policy against Georgian Dream officials for “backsliding democracy”, were likely to be “radically reconsidered.”

Responding to a journalist’s question about former Donald Trump’s recent statements on banks on Monday, .

“Generally, the policies pursued under the previous administration undermined trust in the banking system. Therefore, it is entirely logical that the Trump administration is considering a review of this approach,” Kobakhidze said.

He added that rebuilding credibility in the banking sector was crucial, both domestically in the US and internationally, and expressed the view that sanctions policies would be part of this reassessment.

Last week Trump signed an executive order titled Guaranteeing Fair Banking for All Americans. This order directs federal regulators to ensure that financial institutions do not deny or restrict services based on political beliefs, religious affiliations, or lawful business activities.

It mandates that regulators review past practices within 120 days and refer any instances of unlawful debanking to the Department of Justice. The order also requires the Treasury Department to develop strategies to prevent such practices in the future.
