Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has formally introduced Givi Mikanadze as the country’s new Minister of Education, Science and Youth, pledging “sweeping reforms” to the education system and describing the new minister as “exceptionally qualified” for the role.
Speaking to ministry staff on Tuesday, Kobakhidze highlighted Mikanadze’s “extensive background” in education, law, governance, and public service. “He has worked as a lecturer in higher education institutions, authored numerous legal publications, served as rector of the MIA Academy, and played an active role in shaping future education reforms,” the Prime Minister said.
Calling Mikanadze “an exceptionally conscientious person,” Kobakhidze praised his combination of academic, managerial, and political experience, and expressed confidence in his ability to lead a ministry tasked with shaping the next generation.
The Prime Minister used the occasion to stress the urgency of overhauling both higher and general education systems. “Our ambitious goal is to fundamentally reform higher education,” he said. “The current system does not meet the 21st-century needs of our country’s university education. Fundamental change is needed - and I believe it can be achieved in the medium term.”
Mikanadze, in turn, thanked the Prime Minister for his trust and described the appointment as a “great honour” and a “heightened responsibility” to the nation. “It is a privilege to lead a ministry focused on the future, on education, development and the prosperity of this country,” he said.
Outgoing minister Aleksandre Tsuladze also addressed staff, thanking colleagues for their cooperation and extending best wishes to his successor.
