Irakli Pavlenishvili, Deputy Secretary General of the United National Movement (UNM), on Thursday claimed the ruling elite had descended into internal conflict, alleging that escalating infighting and mutual accusations among current and former allies of Bidzina Ivanishvili could lead to criminal investigations.
Pavlenishvili said growing political tensions and public accusations within what he referred to as “Ivanishvili’s gang” - in reference to the ruling party founder and its honorary chair - pointed to a system mired in corruption and self-interest.
“Political hysteria is reaching its peak among Ivanishvili and his gang, as well as clan battles,” Pavlenishvili said. “Accusations from both current and former members are intensifying, and wiretapping will likely become more active. These may ultimately serve as grounds for various criminal cases.”
He warned that the government’s internal rifts could deepen, suggesting that individuals once loyal to the Georgian Dream founder could become instrumental in investigations targeting others within the same circle.
“When a system is based on corruption, disregard for the public interest, and the pursuit of personal gain, it is precisely these kinds of internal battles, wiretapping, and retaliatory accusations that emerge,” he added.
