Georgia’s opposition parties said they had appealed to Syria’s newly formed government to revoke its recognition of what they described as Georgia’s historically integral territories, following the dismantling of a pro-Russian regime in Syria.
Irakli Pavlenishvili, deputy secretary general of the United National Movement, on Friday said the appeal had been made after the change of power in Damascus, arguing that Syria’s earlier recognition violated fundamental principles and norms of international law.
He said the opposition had also actively raised the issue with international partners, including the United States.
Pavlenishvili criticised the ruling Georgian Dream party, saying it had shown no interest in the matter and had failed to raise it in any international discussion or format.
He accused the party’s leadership of prioritising the preservation of its own power rather than defending Georgia’s territorial integrity.
