Ruling GD MP: Georgia Chooses EU March is organized by LGBT and “radical opposition”

Irakli Zarkua, a member of the ruling party Georgian Dream (GD), slammed a protest organized by various NGOs, claiming it is orchestrated by ’’LGBT activists and radical opposition” groups.

He addressed what he described as “honest citizens” who may have been misled into thinking that the protest reflects a broader national agenda.

“If you agree to allow LGBT propaganda to be part of our national discourse, you are welcome to join today’s march,” he said.

Zarkua expressed concerns about the implications of supporting such activism, urging citizens to reconsider their stance.

“You are invited to engage in discussions about the development of Georgia alongside those advocating for LGBT rights. Are you truly in agreement with having gay and lesbian activists and their agenda at the forefront of our discussions?” he stressed.

He also mentioned that many activists are leaving the ranks of the opposition due to these issues.

“We have information that many have resigned from this party because they realized how contradictory it is for a Georgian man, known for his hospitality and traditions, to participate in actions perceived as supporting LGBT propaganda and their Pride,” Zarkhua stated.

Regarding the organizers of the protest, Zarkua saw this as an opportunity to demonstrate the distinctions between the ruling party and those supporting LGBT rights.

“I would like to thank the organizers for helping us demonstrate the differences between our values and those of the LGBT community,” he concluded, emphasizing the importance of upholding Georgian traditions.

The Georgia Chooses EU march, organized by several non-governmental organizations, aims to demonstrate the public’s desire for closer ties with the European Union. The march will begin at 7 pm in Tbilisi from the following four locations: Marjanishvili Square, Heroes’ Square, Republic Square, and 300 Aragveli Square, ultimately converging at Freedom Square, where participants will gather to show their support for Georgia’s European integration. President Salome Zourabichvili is expected to join the march.
