The overall situation in Georgia is worsening and will deteriorate even further, European Parliament member Rasa Juknevičienė said on Wednesday, stressing that democracy is far removed from the country’s current reality.

Juknevičienė said the ruling Georgian Dream party was pursuing policies aimed at consolidating authoritarianism in the style of the Kremlin.

“As I understand, there is no acknowledgment from the ruling party that they are doing anything wrong. On the contrary, they are trying to establish dictatorship and autocracy, and they are doing so in a Kremlin-like manner. The use of so-called ‘titushki’ is part of this process,” she stated.

The MEP warned that the ruling authorities are openly deploying all possible instruments to tighten control.

“Today, their masks are off. They are doing the same things as before, only now more openly. Their interest lies in seizing the country because they understand that the European path means democracy and the change of Government. Democracy is very different from what is happening now in Georgia,” Juknevičienė concluded.
