Police in Tbilisi have arrested five people on suspicion of group assault causing intentional minor injury, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia said on Monday.

Investigators said the suspects were involved in a confrontation that escalated into violence against two individuals, both men born in 1997 and 1998.

During the incident, one of the victims sustained injuries inflicted with a sharp object. He was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The suspects fled the scene but were later detained in a swift police operation, the ministry added.

The crime carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.
