Kallas said the EU continued to stand with the Georgian people but stressed that progress in Georgia’s EU candidate status would not move forward while the government pursued what she described as misguided policies

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has said that Georgia’s government is taking the country in the wrong direction, warning that its current course does not lead towards EU membership.

Speaking on the issue on Thursday, Kallas said the EU continued to stand with the Georgian people but stressed that progress in Georgia’s EU candidate status would not move forward while the government pursued what she described as misguided policies.

“The Georgian government is taking the country in the wrong direction. This path does not lead towards the European Union,” she said. “Our strong message to the Georgian people is that we stand by them, but as long as the government continues to take the wrong steps, we do not intend to advance the candidate status process.”
