The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has expressed concern over the ongoing developments in Georgia. Speaking to journalists in Brussels ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday, Kallas said that the “situation remains worrying” and that the EU “is considering further actions”.
“We will also discuss the issue of Georgia. Of course, the developments there are quite worrying, and we will consider what else we can do,” Kallas said.
The EU’s top diplomat also mentioned that sanctions against individuals involved in violence against peaceful protesters have been raised within the bloc. However, she acknowledged that consensus has yet to be reached, as two EU member states remain opposed to such measures.
“So far, we have not managed to convince two European countries to agree to this as well, but we will continue to try,” Kallas noted.
The statement comes amid growing tensions in Georgia, sparked by allegations of electoral fraud in last year’s general elections and the Government’s decision in late 2024 to halt EU integration until 2028.
