Tbilisi’s mayor, Kakha Kaladze, has announced that the city will hold its annual awards ceremony for successful athletes on Friday.

Speaking at a municipal government meeting on Thursday, Kaladze said the event, held every year since 2018, is an important programme designed to promote professional sports and recognise the achievements of distinguished athletes.

“Supporting and developing sport is one of our key priorities. In recent years, the Georgian government has implemented numerous programmes to reward successful athletes. At the municipal level, we also focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging sport. Through my own daily life, I try to set an example for future generations and show how important it is to live a healthy, active life. This benefits both our health and longevity,” Kaladze said.

He added that the city administration has implemented various initiatives and programmes to support both professional and amateur sports, with dedicated funding for these efforts.

Since 2018, a total of 931 athletes have been recognised through the awards programme.

At this year’s ceremony, 236 Tbilisi-based athletes who achieved notable success at world and European championships will be honoured. The mayor said the programme’s budget for the current year is 1,297,000 lari.
