Incumbent Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze on Saturday claimed that European Union and German ambassadors to Georgia could be seen participating in anti-Government rallies in the country, alleging that they stand “at the head of agent networks” seeking to divide Georgian society.
“All the misfortunes happening in this country - attempts to sow division, polarisation - are being imposed from the outside,” Kaladze told reporters, responding to questions about upcoming demonstrations.
He said radical groups in the country were financed and directed from abroad to provoke confrontation.
“A Georgian man, by his nature, worldview, culture and traditions, would never behave like these homelandless agents. This is all financed from outside, and the public must know it,” Kaladze said.
He added that past warnings of foreign interference had been dismissed, but US President Donald Trump “named things directly” by accusing international organisations of supporting political processes in countries including Georgia through NGO funding.
Kaladze alleged that hundreds of millions of dollars had been spent on building agent networks in Georgia and training radical activists.
“As for the announced rallies, in the final series we may even see the EU and German ambassadors on the streets against the Government. The agents are led by them. Radical groups in Georgia have their patrons in the form of ambassadors. Money and instructions come from outside, and these ambassadors are directly involved in fueling hatred, hostility, and confrontation among our people,” he stated.
