Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said that Georgia’s ruling party demanded only fairness from the European Union in its attitude toward the Georgian state and its citizens.

Speaking on Monday about the recent tensions and calls to “reset” relations between Georgia and the EU, Kaladze criticized what he called the “European bureaucracy,” claiming that many of its statements about Georgia were “based on lies and distortions.”

“A large part of today’s European bureaucracy has lost its face. Every statement they make about Georgia is filled with lies, contains no truth, and has nothing to do with reality,” Kaladze said.

He added that several attempts had been made to organize revolutions and overthrow the government in Georgia, calling such actions “categorically unacceptable.”

“When we spoke about the transparency law, the necessity of adopting it came precisely from such facts. On one hand, they told us they were friends of Georgia, while on the other hand, they encouraged coups, revolutions, extremism, and violence. That’s not friendship or partnership,” he added.

Responding to a question about whether the ruling party was seeking EU recognition of the 2024 parliamentary election results, Kaladze stressed that the only body legitimizing elections is the Georgian people.

“Elections are legitimized by the Georgian people. What we demand from the EU is respect for the Georgian people, our constitution, and our independence. We are always ready for friendship and partnership, but it cannot be one-sided,” Kaladze said.
