Tbilisi mayor Kakha Kaladze has said corruption is a global challenge and that efforts to combat it are essential, commenting on the ongoing investigation into former State Security Service head Grigol Liluashvili.

Speaking to journalists, Kaladze said he would not go beyond statements already made by investigative authorities, citing the interests of the investigation.

“The investigation is under way in all directions,” he said. “From my side, I cannot add anything further. Let us wait for the investigation to conclude, and all questions will be answered.”

Kaladze said he welcomed anti-corruption efforts, describing them as one of the most important areas of public policy.

“Corruption is a challenge faced across the world,” he said. “It is positive that the relevant agencies are taking concrete steps to ensure prevention and, where crimes are identified, that appropriate action is taken.”

Liluashvili was arrested on Tuesday on bribery charges.
