Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has criticized outgoing German Ambassador Peter Fischer, saying his actions and public statements demonstrated “how an ambassador should not behave.”
Speaking to journalists after Fischer announced the end of his diplomatic mission in Georgia on Tuesday, Kaladze claimed the ambassador had acted outside the norms of diplomacy and sought to undermine relations between Georgia and Germany.
“Fischer is a ‘good’ example of how an ambassador should not behave. Through his actions and statements, he proved this and showed it to Georgian society,” Kaladze said.
“He did everything contrary to diplomatic standards. His statements, assessments, and what I describe as encouragement and support for extremist and violent groups are very serious and serve as an example of how an ambassador should not act.”
Kaladze also accused Fischer of damaging bilateral ties during his tenure.
“He did everything he could not to contribute positively to relations between our states, but rather tried to damage them,” the mayor said.
The mayor went on to claim that Fischer represented what the Georgian government has previously described as external forces seeking to influence domestic politics.
“When we speak about agents, there are specific individuals and groups inside the country, including political parties, and everyone should know that they are agents directed from abroad,” Kaladze said.
Referring to the government's frequently used claims about a so-called “global war party” and the “deep state,” Kaladze argued that those allegations had gained credibility after comments by the current US president.
“Many people mocked us when we spoke about the global war party and the deep state, but after the current president of the United States spoke openly about these issues, they realized we were not mistaken,” he said.
