Georgia’s ruling party has welcomed the peace agreement signed in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan, calling it an important step for stability and development in the South Caucasus.

Kakha Kaladze, Secretary General of the Georgian Dream party and Mayor of Tbilisi, told journalists on Tuesday that Georgia could also have contributed to achieving the deal, noting that the country had repeatedly offered to facilitate dialogue between the two neighbours.

“We welcome the agreement reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Georgia could have been used to help achieve this agreement, and we made numerous offers from our side. Today, more than ever, maintaining peace in the region is of the utmost importance,” Kaladze said.

The US-brokered accord, signed at the White House on 8 August, includes mutual recognition of territorial integrity and the establishment of a new US-operated transport corridor linking mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave. The initiative, known as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, is designed to boost trade and connectivity across the region.

Kaladze stressed that peace “brings development, progress and economic growth,” adding that the current global climate made such agreements even more critical.
