Tbilisi Mayor slams US Senators’ criticism of Georgian government’s direction

Tbilisi Mayor Kakhaber Kaladze issued a firm response to recent comments made by US senators, declaring that “anyone who makes such statements is an enemy.” Kaladze expressed his displeasure with the criticism, emphasizing his commitment to safeguarding Georgia’s dignity, regardless of the source of the remarks.

Kaladze welcomed the presence of international observers for Georgia’s upcoming elections on October 26, calling their role in monitoring the process positive. He highlighted the peaceful nature of the election campaign, noting that all political parties have the opportunity to present their visions for the country’s future. However, he criticized what he described as a “radical group” that, in his opinion, spreads false information and lacks meaningful contributions.

Addressing the broader issue, Kaladze stressed that anyone who disrespects Georgia—be they American, European, Russian, or Chinese—is considered an adversary.

“It doesn’t matter if they are a senator or anyone else. Anyone who insults my country or my people and makes such statements is an enemy,” he stated.
On Thursday, US Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Jim Risch, and Ben Cardin expressed concerns over a significant shift in US-Georgia relations, citing the passage of the controversial Foreign Influence Transparency Law as having negatively impacted bilateral ties. The senators also criticized the Georgian government’s current direction, expressing hope that the Georgian people would make the right decision to steer the country back toward a European path.
