Canada has announced its intention to reassess relations with the Georgian government after raising concerns over alleged electoral misconduct in Georgia’s October 26 parliamentary elections.
The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday, commending Georgians for their civic engagement but expressing alarm over reported irregularities in the election process.
According to the statement, Canada took note of widespread allegations of voter intimidation, bribery, and other abuses as reported by the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and other independent observers.
“These reports should be looked into and investigated,” the statement emphasized, underscoring Canada’s commitment to the principles of democratic governance.
In collaboration with the G7 and European allies, Canada now intends to review its diplomatic stance toward the Georgian authorities. “We call on all sides to remain calm, and urge Georgian authorities to uphold the rights and safety of individuals engaging in peaceful protest,” the statement added. Canada reaffirmed its support for Georgia’s democratic aspirations, applauding the active participation of Georgian citizens, voters, election staff, and local observers in the recent elections.
