A senior figure from Georgia’s opposition United National Movement (UNM) has challenged the government’s repeated warnings of alleged security threats, accusing it of failing to act on its own claims.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Khatia Dekanoidze, Deputy Chair of the UNM’s National Committee, said that if Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and what she described as the regime’s “so-called law enforcement bodies” truly possess information about planned incidents, they should have already taken preventive measures.
“If the state has any specific information suggesting that people may gather near certain administrative buildings, then concrete steps must be taken to ensure security,” Dekanoidze said. “If the authorities know of particular actions, as they constantly claim, why have they not implemented the measures prescribed by law?”
Dekanoidze suggested that the government’s rhetoric was aimed at intimidating the public and discrediting its opponents, rather than maintaining order and transparency.
