That time when the Georgian Dream authorities and ministers should have held multiple meetings in Brussels ahead of the EU decision on Georgia’s candidate status, our Foreign Minister opened a plant yesterday, the country’s former Defence Minister Tina Khidasheli said on Friday.
She said that she had no “high expectations” over the European Commission conclusion on the candidate status for Georgia later today. However, she expressed hope that the commission’s “political decision on June 24 will not leave Georgia in the backyard of Russia.”
“I have no optimistic expectations for today’s conclusion, because this conclusion is procedural and an assessment should actually be made of current events. Unfortunately, nothing is happening in Georgia in response to the criticism in terms of such democratic reforms, which have been recommended by European structures for a long time on.
“I still hope that when it comes to a political decision on June 24, European political leaders will not leave Georgia in Russia’s backyard. I hope for their wisdom, because it is clear that the Georgian government is not doing anything at this historic moment,” Khidasheli said.
Georgia applied for EU membership back in March 2022, along with Ukraine and Moldova.
The trio are now expecting the bloc’s decision on the candidate status.
