A young woman who was doused in petrol and set on fire by her former husband in central Georgia has died from her injuries, hospital officials in Tbilisi have confirmed.

The victim, who had been receiving treatment at the capital’s burns centre, suffered burns to 45% of her body and was in critical condition before passing away.

The attack took place on 25 September in the town of Kaspi, where the man stabbed his ex-wife in the neck and throat before attempting to burn her alive.

Police said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
