Kobakhidze: EU, US ambassadors ‘lack information’ on constitutional amendments

Head of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party Irakli Kobakhidze has responded to the criticism of the EU and US ambassadors on the removal of a note from the constitutional amendments which concern the election rule of the country’s prosecutor general. 

 

Kobakhidze said that ‘it seems’ the ambassadors ‘have not been well-informed on the legal nonsense.’ 

 

He said that he is ready to meet with the ambassadors and provide further explanations. 

 

Yesterday the Georgian parliament approved constitutional changes with its first reading which were drafted in line with the April 2021 EU-mediated agreement. 

 

The amendments approved include the stipulations that the next two parliamentary elections in Georgia must be held with a two percent election threshold and in a fully proportional electoral system. 

The note on the election of the country’s prosecutor general by three/fifth of MPs was removed. 

 

The EU and US ambassadors slammed the parliament for the ‘missed opportunity’ to elect the prosecutor general with a broad consensus and ensure improvements in the country’s judiciary.
