Police in western Georgia have arrested two Ukrainian nationals on charges related to the illegal purchase, possession and facilitation of the distribution of large and particularly large quantities of drugs, the Georgian Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The suspects, both born in 2000 and identified by their initials as V.M. and N.U., were detained by officers from the Imereti Police Department.

According to the ministry, law enforcement officers seized a particularly large quantity of the drug methadone during searches of the suspects’ personal belongings and temporary residences, as well as from locations they indicated during an investigative experiment. Materials used for packaging narcotics were also recovered as evidence.

The offences carry a potential sentence of up to 20 years or life imprisonment, authorities said.
