Police in Georgia’s Kvemo Kartli region have detained a man on charges of large-scale embezzlement, the Interior Ministry has said.

According to the ministry, officers from the Marneuli District Police Division arrested a 48-year-old man, identified as Sh.F., at the Sarpi border crossing.

Investigators said that another individual, N.G., born in 1981, had entrusted the suspect with $10,000 to be delivered to a friend living in Azerbaijan. The money was allegedly misappropriated by the suspect instead.

Following investigative measures, Sh.F. was detained as an accused person under a court warrant.

The crime carries a possible sentence of up to 11 years in prison.
