Kyiv accuses Russia of targeting Dnipro HPP

Ukraine has claimed Friday’s extensive missile attack by Russia was aimed at the energy infrastructure of the country, specifically targeting the Dnipro hydroelectric station.

According to reports from the Zaporizhia District Military Administration, the strike included the Dnipro HPP.

Ukrhydroenergo,the energy company responsible for the station, has confirmed the attack, labeling it as an assault on one of Zaporizhia’s major hydroelectric power stations. It has also accused Russia of attempting to instigate a new ecological catastrophe following the previous incident at Kakhovka.

The company stated that the invading forces targeted the dam and hydro facilities of Dnipro HPP. Despite the attack, the energy company assured that they were actively battling the resulting fires at the station. They further emphasized that the situation at the dam is under control, and there is no immediate risk of collapse.

In June 2023, the Kakhovka HPP dam on the Dnieper River in the Kherson region of Ukraine, which falls within the territory occupied by Russia, suffered a catastrophic collapse. Ukraine attributed the disaster to an explosion at the HPP, accusing Russia of ecocide. 
However, Russia has countered, alleging that the sabotage was orchestrated by Ukrainian forces.

The collapse of the Kakhovka dam resulted in numerous casualties, widespread flooding, and significant environmental damage. 

Thousands were displaced from their homes, and the Ukrainian government estimated the environmental impact at 1.5 billion dollars.
