Two-time Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri openly distanced himself from the political views of Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili following the awards ceremony for Olympians and Paralympians.

Speaking to the media, Bekauri emphasized that Georgia deserves a president who is more “dignified, Orthodox, and a representative of the interests of the Georgian people.”

“I believe this award is from my people. I am here because the institution of the presidency is very important to me. As for Ms. Salome, I completely distance myself from her political views and think that my homeland deserves a more worthy, Orthodox president who upholds the interests of the Georgian people,” Bekauri stated.

On Friday Georgian President awarded Olympians and Paralympians with medals of honor, congratulating them with their achievements.
