Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has praised Georgia’s government for “recognizing its national identity” and “understanding the dangers” of liberal democratic values. In an interview with RBK, Lavrov said the Georgian government was aligning with the country’s Orthodox and cultural heritage.

“What the Georgian government is doing now is realizing their own national identity and understanding that the Georgian people hold values tied to Orthodoxy and national culture,” Lavrov claimed. He suggested that Western-imposed liberal democracy “threatens to erase and trample these values”.

Lavrov also noted that Georgians, like Russians, were “resistant” to the “unbridled embrace” of the “LGBT agenda promoted by the West”.

The Georgian Dream ruling party has initiated and passed the bill combating “LGBT propaganda” in its second reading this week, with plans to reflect the changes in the country’s constitution if it secures the constitutional majority in the October 26 general elections.

The western organizations have condemned the bill as a threat to human rights.
