Legal Committee supports overcoming President’s veto on “Agents’ Law”

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia on Monday backed the decision to override the President’s veto on the controversial “Agents’ Law.” The majority of the committee members belong to the ruling party, Georgian Dream.
During the committee meeting, representatives from the majority requested that the Parliamentary Secretary of the President, Giorgi Mskhiladzi, review the veto-motivated comments article by article. Mskhiladzi refused to comply with this request.
On May 14, despite widespread protests and appeals from international partners, the Parliament passed the bill in its third reading. The President vetoed the law on May 18, labeling it as the “Russian Law” once again.
On May 23, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a policy of visa restrictions targeting individuals undermining democracy in Georgia, alongside a comprehensive review of US-Georgia cooperation. The names of those affected and their family members have not yet been disclosed.
