Giorgi Sioridze, one of the leaders of the opposition party Lelo, on Saturday expressed full support for Georgian non-governmental organisations following the freezing of the accounts of seven NGOs, accusing Bidzina Ivanishvili’s Government of undermining democracy.

“The Georgian non-governmental sector has always stood guard over democracy in Georgia – a democracy whose main enemy is Ivanishvili and his Russian regime,” Sioridze said.

He added that international partners “have always been, and will remain, partners of the Georgian people and Georgian statehood,” and welcomed their reaction to recent developments.

Sioridze added Lelo would not allow “Ivanishvili’s regime to escape accountability for the arbitrariness it is committing” or to silence dissenting voices in Georgia.
