Levan Khabeishvili, Chairman of the political council of Georgia's opposition party, United National Movement, on Sunday accused Government officials of being behind the growing number of illegal constructions in Bakhmaro, a mountain resort in the western Guria region.

“Every day in Bakhmaro, new illegal constructions appear, and behind all of this stand representatives of the authorities, including the mayor of Chokhatauri”, Khabeishvili said.

He described the situation as “a devastating reality,” accusing the Government of allowing the destruction of the area through deforestation and unlawful building.

“Anyone who visits will see dozens of new illegal constructions, and it is clear that their owners are only officials and people close to the ruling party. This is a criminal offense, openly carried out, including by the mayor of Chokhatauri”, Khabeishvili stated.
