Levan Machavariani, First Deputy Chair of the Georgian Dream parliamentary faction, on Wednesday addressed comments by opposition members, defending Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and the ruling party’s record on corruption, economic policy, and international relations.
Speaking in parliament, Machavariani contrasted the current government with the tenure of former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, highlighting measures taken under Kobakhidze to increase transparency, combat corruption, and digitize government procurement. He said all actions and appointments, including the leadership of the State Security Service, have been publicly accountable.
On food prices, Machavariani urged patience, noting that government measures will be finalized by the end of April to stabilize prices.
He also discussed Georgia-US relations, citing a legacy of difficulties left by the previous US administration. Machavariani said the government was ready to cooperate with Washington to develop a mutually beneficial plan for strengthening bilateral ties.
Regarding the Moscow Mechanism, Machavariani argued that opposition claims were unfair, noting the mechanism was not applied to alleged abuses during prior administrations. He stressed that the current government’s philosophy prioritized human freedom and dignity.
Machavariani further highlighted the significance of the UAE EMAAR investment project, describing it as a catalyst for broader foreign investment in Georgia. He said the project will create around 24,000 jobs during development and approximately 8,000 upon completion, with a direct economic impact estimated at $11 billion.
