Levan Machavariani, deputy head of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction, on Friday rejected European criticism of the country’s authorities over alleged democratic backsliding, saying such claims were “absolutely baseless” and “nothing but rumours.”
Speaking for the press, Machavariani argued that EU bureaucrats’ accusations “lack factual foundation” and pointed to the European Commission’s recent report, which he said had ranked Georgia among the top 20 European countries for judicial independence and the strength of state institutions.
“When they [EU bureaucrats] make accusations, there are no facts behind them. It’s simply gossip and an attempt to create perceptions,” Machavariani said. “In the European Commission’s report, Georgia ranks in the top 20 for judicial independence, strong state institutions, government effectiveness, and an investor-friendly business environment. All of this is based on facts and reality.”
Machavariani added that Georgian citizens “understand clearly what is right and wrong” and recognised that EU accusations were “unfounded.”
