The decision on whether to replace Kaja Kallas rests with the European Union and its member states, but Georgia would prefer a far more competent, experienced and professional individual in the role, ruling party MP Levan Makhashvili said.

Makhashvili on Monday said that the EU is currently facing extremely serious geopolitical challenges and navigating complex international developments.

“The European Union is at the epicenter of these processes, and if there was ever a moment when it needed a professional, competent and experienced diplomat with impeccable diplomatic skills and expertise, it is now,” Makhashvili said.

He expressed regret that, at what he described as a critical moment, the head of the EU’s external service is Kaja Kallas. While acknowledging that it is solely up to the EU and its member states to decide whether she should be replaced, Makhashvili said Georgia’s position is shaped by what he called Kallas’s non-professional, undiplomatic and unfair attitude towards Georgia.

“From Georgia’s perspective, given the history of her approach towards our country, we would of course prefer a far more competent, experienced and professional person in this important and key position,” he said.

Separately, European Parliament Vice-President Javier López has also said that Kaja Kallas is unfit for the post.
