Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, has warned that Georgia’s path toward EU membership will be fraught with external pressure, political manipulation, and what he called “unfair decisions” from certain foreign actors.

In his comments on Tuesday, Makhashvili cautioned that while Georgia remained committed to its European future, it should be prepared for significant resistance from both state and non-state actors who may, in his words, attempt to “turn the accession process into an endless labyrinth.”

“There will be forces whose demands and decisions will be unjust. There will be states that use the issue of integration as a weapon in political battles,” Makhashvili claimed. “They will play on the emotions and nerves of our population, interfere in our internal affairs, and try to lead Georgia in their own direction.”

Despite the potential challenges, Makhashvili insisted that the ruling Georgian Dream government “will take each step based solely on Georgia’s national interest.” He expressed confidence that while some European politicians may falter in what he described as “unfair political coquetry,” Georgia will remain steady on its course.

“We act not for today, but for a better tomorrow - a united, peaceful, and prosperous Georgia,” he wrote. “Many foreign governments may be swept away by the current, but we will move forward with calmness and wisdom, acting not in the interest of any foreign capital, but for the benefit of the Georgian people.”
