Levan Makhashvili, chair of Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee and a member of the ruling party, said Moldovan President Maia Sandu has become a “loud voice” making “harmful” remarks about Georgia, arguing that she has no mandate to comment on the country’s internal affairs.
Makhashvili criticised Sandu over her comments suggesting that Russia had drawn Georgia back into its political orbit.
“Considering the history and the statements she has made about Georgia, everything is clear. The public remembers well how, on October 4, she supported calls for a violent change of Government through her statements. This appears to be a continuation of a broader process,” Makhashvili said.
He suggested that foreign politicians often use Georgia-related issues for their own internal political purposes, including to justify domestic political setbacks, and said Sandu’s remarks could be part of that pattern.
Makhashvili also said he would favour certain diplomatic steps in response to the statement, including the possible summoning of Moldova’s ambassador, though he noted this as a personal view.
Sandu has previously stated that Russia brought Georgia back into its orbit by exploiting fears of war and by sending messages that a “wrong choice” in elections would come at the cost of peace.
