A member of the political movement United Neutral Georgia has described President Mikheil Kavelashvili’s open letter to US President Donald Trump as both “timely and necessary”.
Levan Nikoleishvil on Monday said that despite what he called a clear alignment of values between Trump’s policies and those of the Georgian government, relations between Tbilisi and Washington remained in a “passive state”.
Writing on social media, Nikoleishvili argued that the Georgian president’s proposal to restart bilateral relations “from a clean slate” reflected the country’s sincerity and its desire for a “long-term, dignified friendship” with the United States.
He claimed that the current lack of progress raised “legitimate bewilderment” in Georgian society and created space for what he termed the “deep state” and its supporters to damage not only Georgia-US relations but also Georgian statehood itself.
