Sanikidze described the report as containing severe criticism

Levan Sanikidze, a senior figure in the United National Movement, on Wednesday claimed that the first report on Georgia by the US President Donald Trump administration was "extremely critical" of the ruling Georgian Dream party and accelerated the legislative process for the MEGOBARI Act.

The act - an acronym for Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence -  is a US bill aimed at reassessing relations with Georgia in response to what Washington sees as democratic backsliding under the ruling Georgian Dream party. It mandates sanctions on officials accused of corruption or undermining democracy, boosts support for civil society, and reaffirms US backing for Georgia’s sovereignty. The act passed the US House in May 2025 and is awaiting Senate approval.

Sanikidze described the report as containing severe criticism, including allegations of violence and unprecedented pressure on the media. He asserted that the findings “directly accelerated the passage of the MEGOBARI Act,” arguing that the report underscored Georgian Dream’s inability to normalise relations with the Trump administration.

He further added “we are convinced that at the very start of autumn, the MEGOBARI Act will be passed, actively supporting Georgian society while delivering a significant blow to Georgian Dream’s Russian-aligned regime.”
