Georgia’s government on Wednesday said special supermarket sections offering discounted essential goods will be introduced following discussions between officials and businesses over rising consumer prices.
The head of the government administration, Levan Zhorzholiani, said authorities and retail representatives had identified 15 essential consumer products that would be included in the initiative.
Zhorzholiani claimed major retail chains will create designated areas where the discounted items will be displayed.
He said the move followed work by a government and parliamentary commission established to examine issues related to consumer prices.
“The commission actively worked on identifying problematic issues related to consumer prices,” Zhorzholiani said. “As a result of communication between the government and business, 15 essential products that are most important for consumers were identified.”
He described the initiative as a short-term measure aimed at easing pressure on households, while adding that further work would be needed to achieve longer-term results on pricing.
