Georgia ranks ahead of two member states of both the EU and NATO in terms of perceived freedom from corruption, Levan Zhorzholiani, head of the government administration, said on Tuesday.

Zhorzholiani attributed the result to what he described as the government’s anti-corruption policy, which he said is built on several key pillars.

He highlighted preventive mechanisms, improvements to the legislative framework and stronger enforcement of the law as central elements. According to the official, law enforcement agencies have recently shown what he called an unprecedented level of activity in tackling corruption.

Zhorzholiani also pointed to reforms in state privatisation, the energy sector and the public procurement system, describing them as important steps towards strengthening transparency and governance.
