The head of Georgia’s Government Administration, Levan Zhorzholiani, said fuel prices in Georgia remain “significantly lower” than in European countries, citing the country’s tax policy, while noting that the government was continuing talks with fuel companies to identify opportunities for further price reductions.
Speaking after a meeting of the government’s coordinating commission on food prices on Friday, Zhorzholiani said representatives and executives of major fuel companies operating in Georgia were invited to discuss the fuel pricing system and market conditions.
He noted Georgia’s excise tax on fuel was around three times lower than the corresponding rate in European countries, which was a key factor behind comparatively lower fuel prices on the domestic market.
“Compared to the average European level, fuel prices in Georgia are noticeably lower. This is largely due to our tax legislation, particularly the excise tax rate, which is roughly three times lower than in Europe,” Zhorzholiani said.
Despite this, he stressed that the government was maintained active dialogue with fuel companies to assess whether additional room exists for price reductions.
“We are continuing to work together with fuel companies to find space for further decreases in prices,” he added.
